In a bold move against the tide of popular opinion, Dr. Paul McHugh has argued in 2015 that transgenderism is a mental disorder that merits treatment and not affirmation through gender reassignment surgery.
A distinguished professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. McHugh has authored six books and over 125 peer-reviewed medical articles on transgenderism. He is clearly a credible source on the subject, but an argument like his wouldn't stand in today's climate of social media and mainstream media manipulation.
His argument eight years ago is based upon the fact that transgenderism is a disorder of “assumption” – believing one’s gender to be different from what nature assigned them biologically – rather than an actual physical reality that can be changed through surgery.
His contention is supported by a suicide rate among transgender people who had reassignment surgery that is 20 times higher than the rate of non-transgender individuals, as well as studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic which have found that up to 80% of children who express transgender feelings “spontaneously lose those feelings” in time.
Dr. McHugh further believes that the government, Hollywood, and other major media outlets have done a disservice to the public by promoting transgenderism as a “right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention”. He further argues that it is important to approach children who express transgender feelings with compassion and caution, and avoid any medical interventions until more research has been done.
By advocating for a deeper understanding of the psychological causes of gender dysphoria, Dr. McHugh stands firmly against the tide in an effort to bring awareness to the plight of those grappling with gender identity issues. His courage to stand up for what he believes is right is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the advancement of mental health research, as well as the welfare of individuals struggling with gender dysphoria.
In light of the current climate of opinion regarding transgenderism, Dr. McHugh’s perspective remains an important reminder that more research is needed before subjecting youth to medical interventions.
Dr. Paul McHugh’s argument against gender reassignment surgeries for children has served as an invaluable contribution to the field of mental health and transgenderism. His advocacy for more research on the psychological causes of gender dysphoria before proceeding with any medical interventions should serve as a reminder of the importance of a thorough examination of the science behind gender identity issues.
Through his courage to stand against the tide, Dr. McHugh has brought much-needed attention to this important issue and should be applauded for it.
