Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has made headlines again after joining a little girls’ soccer team in his home state.
The move comes shortly after he voted against a bill aimed at preventing biological males from competing in female sports leagues, a decision he defended on X as a bold stand for trans athletes’ rights. Fetterman, standing at 6-foot-8 and sporting his signature hoodie, laced up his cleats and took to the field with the Braddock Wick Girls’ soccer team, an under-12 squad, to demonstrate that boys can thrive in girls’ sports.
Fetterman’s towering presence on the field has left parents and coaches scratching their heads. The senator, who outweighs most of the team combined, scored three goals in his first practice, prompting mixed reactions from the sidelines.
“It’s about showing kids that anyone can play anywhere,” Fetterman said. “I’m here to be an ally, and if that means proving that biological sex doesn't matter by playing on this team, so be it.”
The Braddock Wick Parents’ Association held an emergency meeting following the senator’s debut. Reports indicate that several families threatened to pull their daughters from the team, citing concerns over fairness and the occasional bruised shin.
“He’s a grown man playing against my 10-year-old,” said Amy Carter, a mother of one of the players. “She’s still learning how to kick a ball, and now she’s dodging a linebacker in gym shorts.”
Fetterman argues that progress often requires discomfort and that his participation is a necessary step toward inclusivity. “
You don’t change the world by sitting on the bench,” he told reporters. “Sometimes you’ve got to step on a few toes to make a point.”
The Senate vote on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act saw Fetterman join Democrats in rejecting the measure, which would have mandated that school sports align with biological sex.
“Sports are about heart, not chromosomes,” Fetterman posted on X after the vote. “I’ll prove it.”
Local coach Brian Hensley, who reluctantly allowed Fetterman to join the roster, admitted the situation has spiraled beyond his control.
“He’s enthusiastic, I’ll give him that,” Hensley said. “But I didn’t sign up to coach a 40-year-old senator who thinks slide tackling is a hug.”
