Reparations Bill Aims to Compensate Former Slaves, Descendants Need Not Apply

The U.S. Congress is on the brink of passing a piece of legislation that could redefine the very concept of reparations for black Americans.

H.R. 40, known as the "Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act," is morphing into a bill that would offer a staggering $10 million to individuals who can prove they were slaves in America.

A Republican staffer, speaking anonymously, argued the sound logic behind the bill.

"Forcing Americans today to pay reparations to descendants of slaves is nonsensical. No one alive today was a slave, and no one alive today owned slaves. This bill ensures we're compensating those directly affected, not just anyone claiming lineage."

The bill, which has caught both parties' attention, would require individuals to provide undeniable proof of their former enslavement. Documents like slave registries or bills of sale would be necessary.

On the Democratic side, another anonymous aide explained the potential loophole, "This bill lets us claim we're addressing reparations, but in reality, it's a way to give ourselves a pat on the back without any real financial outlay. After all, who can prove they were a slave in 2025?"

The proposed amount of $10 million per individual is seen as an acknowledgment of the economic contributions slaves made to the nation's wealth.

The Republican aide added, "This is about acknowledging history, not about opening the floodgates to endless claims. It's justice for those who have been wronged by the slave trade."

However, critics argue that this legislation might serve more as a political gesture than a serious attempt at reparative justice.

"It's obvious that Democrats desperately need the opportunity to celebrate," said Tina Thompson, an online political commentator. "They still haven't recovered from Kamala's defeat in November, so they really just need this win right now."
